Grandpa's Old Guitar

Grandpa was a honkytonking man

He lived by a very simple plan

Never work before noon, keep your guitar in tune

And have yourself the most fun that you can

One day he came home early from the bar

Gave Daddy the keys to his car

Gave Mamma all his money and he said to me, Sonny

I’m giving you my best, this old guitar

He said someday when you can play this old guitar

Someday when you can play this old guitar

You’ll have money in your pockets, girlies in your car

Someday when you can play this old guitar

That guitar didn’t play so good for me

I tried it and the cat ran up a tree

But I practiced every day while my Daddy’s hair turned grey

Mamma didn’t get much company

How I treasured Grandpa’s old guitar

Pretending that I was a super star

When I’d scratch and pick away I could almost hear him say

Do it Sonny, play my old guitar

               * * * * *

I was the silliest kid around

The folks sort of laughed me out of town

But I’m coming home today on a hometown holiday

Grandpa I sure hope you’re looking down

You’ll see me and Mom and Dad and your old guitar

Parading through town in a fancy car

Grandpa you’ll be proud when you see me in that crowd

Today ‘cause I can play that old guitar

            * * * * * *

Today ‘cause I can play that old guitar

Just listen to me play that old guitar

HOT GUITAR SOLO!

I’ve got money in my pocket, girlies in my car

Today ‘cause I can play that old guitar
